The
more overweight a person is, the more likely he or she is to develop
health problems.
There are some extremely important reasons why you NEED to shed
the extra pounds. Being overweight puts you in a very dangerous
category. Being overweight or obese increases your risk for coronary
and heart disease, high blood pressure, kidney trouble, circulatory
disorders, hernia, arthritis, diabetes, gallstones, post surgical
and obstetrical complications.
Overweight
and Obesity – How it hurts your body
The Heart
As your body weight increases and grows in size, it forces your
heart to work overtime. It can lead to a buildup of fatty deposits
in your arteries and form a blood clot. Abnormal levels of these
blood fats are a risk of heart disease. Heart disease is the number
one killer in America. Need I say more?
The lungs
Evidently, it takes a lot more oxygen to keep a fat body going.
Obesity can impede the muscles that inflate and ventilate the lungs.
You begin having trouble breathing and over time you are not able
to take in the oxygen needed by all body cells.
Arthritis
Increased weight means increased work for the back, knees and feet.
Excess weight is really tough for the bones, the joints and the
frame. Overweight and obese individuals are at a high risk of developing
arthritis or foot and ankle pain.
Abnormal Blood fat
When you are overweight, you have a greater chance of having abnormal
levels of blood fats. This is a fat like substance often called
“bad” cholesterol. Abnormal levels of these are a risk
for heart disease.
Gallbladder disease
The most common reason for gallbladder disease is gallstones. Gallstones
are formed when the bile contains too much cholesterol and they
can cause abdominal or back pain.
Diabetes
If you are overweight you will significantly increase your risk
of developing this type of diabetes. Almost all those affected by
this condition are overweight.
This
is a disease in which blood sugar levels are too high. Insulin is
the key hormone that controls the flow of glucose (sugar) in and
out of the cells of the body. The effect of insulin is impaired
and it doesn't have its normal effect on the cells of the body.
Insulin
resistance has a number of knock-on effects: causes high blood glucose,
it disturbs the fat levels in the blood, making arteries of the
heart more likely to clog, it raises blood pressure and increases
the likelihood of gout developing (a painful condition of the joints).
If
you are overweight, losing an average of 2 pounds a week is a safe
way and will reduce the problems linked to overweight.
To
lower your risk of health problems, you need to spend more time
in physical activities. Spend less time watching television and
exercise at least 30 minutes a day.
Eat
healthy and watch the portion. Check out the Food
Pyramid for the recommended daily intake of different food groups.
We
need to be aware of how serious health problems can be when it comes
to poor eating habits and physical inactivity. Changing our habits
around food and exercising on a daily basis is the key to weight
loss.
